Pakistani Education system - my thoughts

Disclaimer: There are my thoughts and anybody has the right to disagree with me.

Since I have been involved in career guidance to students in different local universities and also teach few course. I do interact with students and also with faculty. This ponder alliance groups had been created in 2002 for the same purpose.

I think students have lost their objectives of study. Study is NOT to get knowledge. Study is NOT for leaning. They are just going though the motions. They come to class and listen lectures and get enough marks to pass the exam and ultimately get the degree.

Their desire/objective is degree. Degree help in starting a good career.

I think students should do some soul searching. They have time and their education is sponsored by their parents. What do they do. They have enough time for many activities, but not for studies. They are busy in some activities. They must analyse their activities.

I am writing these observation with rule of average. I mean what mostly students' behavior. I am sure there very few good students as well. It really hurts what is my young generation is doing. No habits of reading. Do not read history. Do not know basics of our religion.

Through this blog, I would like draw attention of young generation who are in a process to acquiring their studies. I think all of you agree with me attendance means students attend the class. But I have noticed that students would request teacher to mark present somebody who had some genuine problem and not in the class. They even DO NOT realize that they are breaking a rule. It is very normal for the students.

Secondly somebody who will do good in exam will get good marks otherwise not. But it is very normal for the students to request teacher to pass or give good marks because either they are overloaded with some important work in life, or they do job and managing their studies or they are seriously ill. I think students must realize that what is the rule for passing in exam. They think it is normal for them tell their problem to teacher and ask him to do something.

With these few lines, I would like our young generation to think what we do? Breaking rules or breaking law has become normal for our society. We even do not feel that we are doing something wrong.

I would like to share an incident that tells the difference in nations and why they are successful. My elder brother teach at Houston Texas. Passing marks in his institution is 60%. One students came and asked about her total marks. My brother told her that she got 58 marks. Only two marks less than the passing mark. I know what a Pakistani student would do. He would request teacher to raise only one marks. Yes or no? Whereas that girl did not dare to request that to her teacher (my brother). She said I have to do that subject again and work hard.

I think we (Pakistanis) need to look what kind of nation we are?

Academia and IT industry Gap

Disclaimer: Viewers has all the right to disagree.  Following are my personal views.

As I have been organizing professional trainings and also teaching in local universities, I noticed that there is huge gap of the knowledge among the students of computer science in Pakistan.  I assume the major reason perhaps is that mostly teacher are non practitioners.  No intention to pint finger.  Just wanted to identify a problem of our society and proposed a solution to improve this situation.

In my personal capacity I would like to contribute to reduce that gap, till my health allows.

I am thinking to offer Complementary awareness Training on following topics

1. Shift from Systems Analysis towards Business Analysis
2. Software Testing
3. Software Quality Assurance
4. Specialized roles in SW development (SDLC)
5. How to manage team (for IT Professionals)

Topics are limited based on my personal knowledge and the few volunteers I have.

Any student would like to hold any of the above session may contact me at   asad.rehman@oisol.com

Business Analysis Certification offered by PMI

There is another certification on Business Analysis is coming up from PMI that is PMI-PBA. When PMI included the 10th knowledge area into their PMBOK i.e. Stakeholder Management I felt now they have learn a lesson how important it is in SW development project to understand and manage stakeholders.

Identification of Stakedoleders
Understand their personality / behaviors
Map their influence / authority

Now PMI in introducing new certification for Business Analysis

CBAP in Pakistan

In my CBAP trainings very few participates from Pakistan.  Mostly from middle east regions.  Now awareness is increasing in this part of the world.

I observed in last one year of so, slowly and gradually awareness about CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) is improving in Pakistani IT industry.  I saw a advertisement in DAWN about looking for Business Analyst. This is good sign for IT professionals in Pakistan.

Scope of Certification in Pakistan

What is the scope of Certifications in Pakistan? . .    I have been asked this question by many young IT Professionals (who are in a early stage of their career) during various discussion we had during meetings in an IT session or in a professional training. Usually their focus of the question is not to understand the benefit of the knowledge of that specific area (Project Management or Business Analysis). I wish we all understand that perhaps if we adopt any good methodology only than we will see its benefits.

My point of view is that there are basically two objectives when you focus on any kind of certification.
  1. You want to improve your knowledge and skills in that particular area. You also want to compare yourself with standard practices.
  2. You want to improve your CV just by getting certification

Be it any certification, PMP, ITIL, COBIT or CBAP. I think with some efforts and guideline how to pass a particular exam you can pass that. You can get marks that will enable you for the certification. But objective of only passing will NOT help you in acquiring the mastery of that subject. Without the efforts of learning that subject you cannot really improve your knowledge and skills in that subject. And that is the reason you cannot add value in your JOB or performance.

And we say certification has no scope in Pakistan. I have seen people who have done certification of PMP but they did not adopt any of the single knowledge area they were taught. You can imagine the improvement they would have in their job or career.
